About 400 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky in central Russia on Friday sending fireballs crashing to Earth, smashing windows and setting off car alarms.

“At first I was puzzled why there was such a long delay between when they saw the meter and when they could hear the explosion. That is because the explosion is not when it hit the ground, but the sonic boom from it hitting our atmosphere!
The mesosphere layer of our atmosphere is where most meteors start to break up. This is about 85km up. That gives us 4 minutes and 7 seconds delay. Very cool!”
